When i look back on all of the many pieces of jewelry that i've designed in the past 29 years, I think that the design I like most of all is my multi-faceted, layered bracelet/necklace wrap. i love that it features a stream of consciousness design technique, where i sit at the studio table and begin to incorporate random trinkets from the studio table, old and new. i love the wire wrapping, the hammering, the engraving, the crocheting, the stitching, the leather, the fabric, the gemstones and pearls. i love that the piece can be worn as a bracelet, or as a choker necklace; when worn different ways, the assorted components take on different highlights, as placement of focal pieces change. i've taught this design several times, continue to teach it with enthusiasm and bliss.
earlier this summer, in june - my favorite month of all - i decided to fashion some jewelry pieces that focused on shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. After pouring through different quotes from characters in that wonderful play, i zeroed in on the lines that spoke the strongest to me; after making that decision, i hand engraved several quotes from the play into sheets of sterling silver.
this new wrap design features these hand engraved words from shakespeare: "you have but slumbered here, while these visions did appear"; i've also engraved shakespeare's name right on the front with his words. the focal piece is a sheet of sterling silver that i've layered with a sheet of aged brass, for added strength and detail; these are joined with brass eyelets, through which i've threaded hand coiled sterling loops. on either side, i've added doubled lengths of silk cord that i hand crocheted with pewtery silver freshwater pearls and faceted moonstone rondelles. there are additional wrapping lengths of doubled deerskin leather in a rich soft brown, onto which i threaded and knotted large silver-grey freshwater pearls. i've incorporated one of my word charms fashioned from an antique oval mother of pearl disc in a silvery grey tone; after drilling with two holes, i added words from an antique book of poetry that say "moon dance"; this is wired with sterling silver to leather. on the opposite side is a large cast sterling cathy daily ring, onto which i've hung a large faceted moonstone oval bead. at one end is a short length of large-looped sterling chain, with a fiery blue/grey faceted labradorite drop. the clasp was meant for a vintage watch fob, and is silverplate.
the wrap goes around the wrist five times (or seven, counting the doubled lengths of crocheted silk and pearls); it loops around the neck twice, as a choker.
total length is 38.5"; the sterling chain allows adjustment down of 1.5".
