Mercury pills were the primary treatment for syphilis during the 18th and 19th centuries. Stored in beautifully decorated urns, mercury was available in neighborhood apothecaries and taken to treat gout, and kidney and bladder stones. Some of us are old enough to remember playing with a fascinating palm full of liquid mercury as children.
